Erectile dysfunction caused by porn; how does it happen?

Researchers have identified pornography-induced erectile dysfunction (PIED) and pornography-induced abnormally low libido.

Image result for porn and edMen who have erectile dysfunction are unable to get or keep an erection long enough to engage in sexual intercourse. An erection normally occurs when there is an increased blood flow into the penis, causing it to enlarge and become erect.

Excessive exposure to pornography can significantly reduce the responsiveness in a man and cause an increased need for more extreme or kinky material for arousal to be achieved.

When overloaded with porn, some men are no longer stimulated in the presence of their partner. They develop what may be described as situational impotence and can only become sexually excited when watching porn.

The role of the brain in PIED

The brain has often been described as a sex organ due to the role it plays in sexual arousal. Understanding how the brain works may lead to a better understanding of the link between porn and erectile dysfunction.

Nerve cells produce chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. These chemicals help transmit information from one nerve cell to another nerve cell, muscle or gland

One particular neurotransmitter called dopamine helps the flow of information to an area of the brain linked to thought and emotion. Dopamine is released by the brain in such situations as hugs, kisses and even the sight of erotic images. This makes the person “feel good”. Erections are dependent on this dopamine mechanism.

Watching porn floods the brain with dopamine. When the level rises excessively, the body tries to compensate for this by taking away some of the dopamine receptors in that area of the brain responsible for arousal. Thus it gradually decreases the body’s sensitivity to the same amount of sexual stimulus.

Thus watching the same amount or grade of porn no longer arouses the person as much or as quickly. They then have to look at more porn or use stronger ones to achieve the initial sensation.

Sexual activities that would normally give people a burst of dopamine and make them happy are no longer enough to sustain their erection. When they try to engage with a real sexual partner, the high sexual expectations they have developed from exposure to porn stars does not fit their expectations and thus they are unable to maintain an erection.

Studies have shown that some men with ED who watched porn were able to obtain a regular erection once the porn was removed. Men who suffer from ED when in the presence of a partner but have no problems when watching porn are said to have PIED.

Thus, they may suffer embarrassment and depression, and may be forced to watch more and more porn.

Research has also shown that the younger the age of the male when they begin to regularly watch porn, the greater the chance of developing PIED.
